My Practice of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis
My private psychology practice is in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where for thirty years I have treated adults, adolescents and children. This is what I provide:
For adults: Regardless of what brings you to therapy — sadness, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, a conflictual relationship with a loved one, a sense of despair or anger, a tendency to be self-critical or a difficulty in controlling your feelings or actions — to be able to talk openly with someone who is not judgmental and who will understand your struggle is therapeutic. In psychotherapy or in psychoanalysis, you can begin an exploration of your history and your feelings, and I will help you to find and express more fully your wishes and your hopes. Whatever the presenting problem and whatever your age, psychodynamic therapy or psychoanalysis can be a unique and at times difficult, even exciting, process. In general, the patterns that cause distress can be changed and modified over time, if only we begin to understand their shape and their genesis. Ultimately, such therapy can permit you to understand yourself better.
For adolescents: Whereas adolescence is often a tumultuous and confusing time of life, it can also be a time when one constructively questions the world, how one functions in it, and how one wants to interact with friends, with scvhool and with parents. Adolescence is a time of intense growth and acts like a fulcrum to one’s future. When difficulties arise, it can be particularly rewarding to talk with someone who is separate from the social, academic and parental demands of the adolescent world. I attempt to create a non-judgmental space where you can speak openly and privately about your thoughts and feelings, and can sort them out and explore them. Fore parents, ad adolescent child — who sometimes can seem distant or moody or impulsive — can present worries and frustrations and I attempt to address those concerns with you.
For children: I am trained in child treatment and see children from the ages of 3 on up, in psychodynamic play therapy. A child can come to treatment for behavioral issues or separation issues or any of a variety of mood disorders or unreasonable fears and anxieties. Nothing can be more interesting than how a child thinks and feels, how he or she constructs the world. Much of this may not become apparent through words, but through the fantasies the child articulates in play. I offer a space for your child to express through play what is troubling him or her. Your child may not be fully aware of what the trouble is or may not be able to verbalize what us bothering him or her. In a non-judgmental setting, your child can explore fears and worries and resolve his or her difficulties.
It is very hard for a parent to see his or her child in psychological distress, a distress which the parent may try valiantly to address but then despite everything cannot resolve. It leaves the parent feeling helpless. I assist you in understand what is going on with your child and I provide guidance to you on how to interact with him or her in the most therapeutic way.
Insurance: My services are eligible for out-of-network benefits, but I am not on any insurance panel. For older patients, my services are covered by Medicare.
